As a rule of thumb, the printable area on a drawstring bag is about 15% narrower than the bag and about 25-30% shorter. On a 12 x 16 inch bag that is roughly a 10 x 12 inch panel. The bag loses width to its side seams and height to the drawstring channel, and printing into either one distorts the artwork once the bag is cinched.

Screen print sinks into the cotton weave; the imprint area is limited by the seams and the cord channel, not by the bag's full dimensions.

Why the print area is smaller than the bag

Three things eat into it, and they are all physical rather than arbitrary.

  • Side seams. Ink cannot lay flat over a seam, so artwork stops roughly an inch inside each edge. That is where the 15% width reduction comes from.
  • The drawstring channel. The top hem is folded and stitched to carry the cord. Printing into it means part of the logo disappears into the fold, and the rest buckles when the bag is pulled shut.
  • Reinforced corners. On cinch-style bags the cord passes through reinforced bottom corners, which is why a 14 x 18 inch cinch bag gives up more height than its size suggests.

Choosing a bag size from your logo, not the other way round

Most buyers pick the bag first and then discover the logo does not fit. Work in the other direction when branding matters more than capacity. A wide horizontal logo lockup needs width, so a 12 x 16 inch bag will read better than a taller, narrower 10 x 18. A tall stacked logo works fine on a narrow bag. If your mark contains a strapline in small type, add an inch of bag size rather than shrinking the type.

Artwork specifications that print cleanly

  • Vector wherever possible. AI, EPS or PDF scale to any bag size without softening. This matters most when the same logo goes on a 4x6 pouch and a 16x20 bag.
  • Raster at 300 dpi at final print size. A 1000px wide PNG is fine at 3 inches and mushy at 10.
  • Minimum type size around 6pt. Below that, fine strokes fill in as ink meets the cotton weave. Natural cotton is more forgiving than you expect on solid shapes and less forgiving on hairlines.
  • Spot colours, not gradients. Each spot colour is a separate screen and a separate pass. One or two colours give the sharpest registration and the lowest unit cost.
  • Convert type to outlines. It removes any chance of a font substituting on our end.

One print location or two?

Front-panel only is the default and covers most jobs. A second location genuinely earns its cost in two cases: a sponsored event, where the sponsor takes the front and the organiser takes the back, and team or club bags carrying a crest on one side and a name on the other. Each location is a separate setup, so on runs under about 500 pieces a second location noticeably moves the unit price.

Frequently asked questions

How big can a logo be on a drawstring bag?

About 15% narrower and 25-30% shorter than the bag itself. On a 12 x 16 inch bag that is roughly 10 x 12 inches; on a 4 x 6 inch pouch it is roughly 3 x 3.5 inches. The bag loses width to its side seams and height to the drawstring channel at the top.

What is the print area on a 14x18 cinch bag?

Roughly 11 x 12 inches on the front panel. A cinch bag gives up more height than its size suggests because the cord passes through reinforced bottom corners as well as the channel at the top, so the artwork has to clear both.

What file format should I send my logo in?

Vector - AI, EPS or PDF - because it scales to any bag size without softening. A raster file works if it is 300 dpi at the final print size. Convert type to outlines before sending so no font can substitute.

What is the smallest text that will print on cotton?

Around 6pt is the practical floor. Below that, fine strokes fill in as ink meets the cotton weave, especially on an open muslin. Solid shapes hold up far better at small sizes than hairlines and thin serifs do.

Can I print on both sides of a drawstring bag?

Yes. Each print location is a separate screen setup, so a second location noticeably affects the unit price on runs under about 500 pieces. It is usually worth it for sponsored events and for club bags carrying a crest on one side and a name on the other.
