Colored Cotton Drawstring Bags: Match Your Brand (Color Guide)

Coloured cotton drawstring bags let the bag itself carry your brand colour, so a one-colour logo print is often all you need. That is the practical argument for them: instead of printing a coloured background onto natural cotton — expensive, and it never looks right — you dye the fabric and print a single contrasting mark on top.

Dyed cotton drawstring bags. The fabric carries the brand colour; the print carries the mark.

Why coloured fabric beats a printed background

Screen printing lays ink on top of the weave. Covering a whole panel in solid ink is slow, uses a lot of ink, cracks where the bag creases, and stiffens the fabric. It also costs a full colour in the setup.

Dyeing colours the fibre itself. The bag stays soft, the colour does not crack, and it looks the same on both sides. For any design where the brand colour is a background rather than a mark, dyed fabric is both cheaper and better.

Choosing a colour that works

  • Match the mark, not the palette. Pick the colour your logo needs to sit on, not your full brand palette. One bag colour and one ink colour is the cleanest and cheapest combination.
  • Mid-tones photograph best. Very dark bags lose their texture in product photography and very pale ones wash out. If the bag will appear in your own marketing images, a mid-tone shows the weave.
  • Consider what it will hold. Pale bags show marks from anything oily, powdery or damp. For soap, coffee, spices or garden use, darker or natural is more forgiving.
  • Natural is not a fallback. Unbleached cotton reads as considered and sustainable, and it is the cheapest option. For food, craft and eco-positioned brands it is often the stronger choice.

Which ink prints on which background

Bag colour Works Avoid
Natural / cream Almost any colour; dark inks are crispest Pale yellows and whites — no contrast
Black White, metallic, bright single colours Dark inks; fine detail in mid-tones
Navy / deep tones White and light neutrals Anything that needs to read as "bright"
Red / strong colours White, black, cream Adjacent hues that muddy against it
Pastels Dark inks, black, deep brand colours White — it disappears

Printing light ink on a dark bag usually needs an underbase — a white layer printed first so the top colour reads true. That counts as an extra colour in the setup, so a white-on-black print is often priced like a two-colour job. Worth knowing before you design.

Colour-fastness and washing

Our coloured cotton uses AZO-free dyes — no azo compounds, which are restricted in textiles for skin contact. Wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry. Expect a very small amount of colour release on the first wash, as with any dyed natural fibre; wash the first load separately.

Two practical notes. Dark bags show lint and pale dust more than natural does. And strong colours will fade slightly over years of sun exposure — relevant if the bags will live on a market stall rather than in a drawer.

Batch-to-batch consistency

This is the thing to raise before you order, not after. Dyed cotton varies slightly between production batches. If you are reordering to sit alongside existing stock, say so — matching a previous run is possible but has to be planned, and a slight shift that is invisible on its own becomes obvious when two batches are stacked together.

For larger runs we can discuss matching a specific brand colour. Send your reference with the quote request and we will confirm what is achievable at your quantity rather than promising it blind.

When to choose natural instead

  • The brand is positioned around sustainability, craft or food — unbleached cotton says that without a word
  • Budget is tight, since natural is the cheapest option and needs no dye process
  • The artwork is multi-colour and needs a neutral ground to read against
  • You are reordering repeatedly and want zero batch-matching risk

Ordering

See coloured cotton drawstring bags for the standard range, or black cotton drawstring bags for the most-ordered single colour. For printing on any of them, custom drawstring bags with your logo covers artwork and minimums, and the imprint area guide covers how large the mark can be. Natural stock is in the main cotton drawstring bag range.

Frequently asked questions

Can you match my exact brand colour?

On larger runs we can work toward a specified colour reference. Send it with your quote request and we will confirm what is achievable at your quantity. Dyed natural fibre has some tolerance, so an exact digital match is not always realistic — we will tell you rather than promise it blind.

Do coloured cotton bags fade or run?

Expect a small amount of colour release on the first wash, as with any dyed natural fibre — wash the first load separately, cold, and air dry. Strong colours fade slightly over years of direct sun exposure, which matters for outdoor market use more than for everyday carry.

What ink colour prints best on a black bag?

White, metallics and bright single colours. Light ink on dark fabric usually needs a white underbase printed first so the top colour reads true, and that counts as an extra colour in the setup — so a white-on-black print is often priced like a two-colour job.

Is coloured cotton more expensive than natural?

Yes, because of the dye process, but it is usually cheaper than printing a solid coloured background onto natural cotton — that uses a lot of ink, stiffens the fabric and cracks at the creases. If your brand colour is a background rather than a mark, dyed fabric is the better buy.

Are the dyes safe?

Our coloured cotton uses AZO-free dyes, meaning no azo compounds of the type restricted in textiles for skin contact. If the bags will hold food or be used by children, ask for the certification specifically rather than relying on a general claim.
