Custom Printed Flour Sacks and Rice Bags: Sizes by Weight and Branding Tips
On this page
Flour needs a bigger bag than rice of the same weight, because flour is much lighter per cup. As a starting point, a 2 lb bag of flour fits an 8x12 cotton bag and 5 lb fits a 12x16, while 5 lb of rice fits a 10x12. For branded flour sacks and rice bags, choose canvas if the flour is fine or the bag will be reused, and print on the outside only.
Small mills, farm shops, bakeries and rice brands use printed cotton sacks because they look like the product inside: simple, natural and worth keeping. All the sizes below are standard cotton drawstring bags, and our cotton flour bags and cotton rice bags come in the full range.

Which size holds how much?
These are practical starting points for a filled bag that still closes above the contents. Grind, moisture and how tightly you fill all change the result, so fill a sample before you order in bulk.
| Weight | Flour | Rice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | 6x10 | 5x7 or 6x8 |
| 2 lb | 8x12 | 6x10 |
| 5 lb | 12x16 | 10x12 |
| 10 lb | 12x20 or 18x20 | 12x16 |
| 25 lb | Ask about a custom size | 18x20 or 20x24 |
Muslin or canvas?
- Canvas is the better choice for fine flour. Its tight weave keeps the dust in, it stands up on a shelf and it prints sharply.
- Muslin is lighter and lower cost. It suits rice, grains, beans and coarse meal, and it works for flour when the bag goes inside an outer box or liner.
Our guide to muslin, canvas and calico compares the weights in more detail.
Designing a flour sack label
A printed sack does the job of a label and a brand at once. Keep the print simple and let the fabric look natural.
- Brand name and product big enough to read from a shelf.
- Net weight. Food sold by weight must show it on the package.
- A short origin line, such as the farm or the grain variety.
- Leave room for a label or stamp with the batch number and date, which change with every run.
One or two ink colours in a traditional style suit flour and rice well. Required food-labeling details such as ingredients and allergens can go on a sticker or sewn-in label so the printed sack works for every batch.
Food use: what to check
Cotton sacks have been used for flour, sugar and grain for generations. If you are packing food for sale, check your local food-labeling and packaging rules, keep bags clean and dry before filling, and print on the outside only. Some producers add a food-grade inner liner, especially for fine flour or long storage.
Who orders printed sacks
- Small and heritage mills selling direct.
- Bakeries selling their own flour blends and bread mixes, often alongside the ideas in cotton bags for bakery and bread packaging.
- Farms and farm shops selling rice, beans and grains.
- Gift and hamper companies building pantry sets.
Frequently asked questions
What size bag do I need for 5 lb of flour?
A 12x16 cotton drawstring bag is a good starting point for 5 lb of flour, leaving room for the cord to close. Rice is denser, so 5 lb fits a 10x12.
Is canvas or muslin better for flour sacks?
Canvas, for fine flour. Its tight weave stops flour dust escaping. Muslin works for rice, grains and coarse meal, or for flour inside an outer liner.
Can I get flour sacks printed with my mill's logo?
Yes, from 100 bags. One or two ink colours on natural cotton give the traditional flour sack look.
What should be printed on a flour sack?
Brand name, product name and net weight, plus space for a batch label. Ingredients and allergen information can go on a sticker so one printed design works for every batch.
Are cotton bags suitable for storing rice?
Yes. Cotton lets rice breathe; keep the bag in a cool, dry pantry. For long storage, many producers use an inner liner.
