Order 10–15% more favour bags than you have guests, and size them around what goes inside rather than buying a standard size and hoping. Those two decisions prevent almost every problem people run into with event favours — running short the week before, or ending up with bags that gape half-empty on the table.
How many to order
Start from confirmed guests, then add for the things that always happen: a few extras for plus-ones confirmed late, a handful damaged during filling, and some kept as mementos by the couple or organisers. Ten to fifteen percent over covers all three.
The cost of over-ordering is small — cotton bags do not expire and the per-unit price falls with volume anyway. The cost of under-ordering is a rush order at short notice, or guests at the last table with nothing. If your number sits just under a price break, round up: between 180 and 200 bags the totals are often within a few percent.

Rule of thumb: measure the item at its widest point, add half an inch either side, then an inch and a half of height so the cord closes without straining the seam. A bag that is slightly full always looks better than one that is slightly empty.
Personalising them
- Screen printing — the option for 100+ bags. A monogram, date or motif in one colour, printed at the factory. Lowest cost per bag at any real quantity and it survives handling.
- Rubber stamp — excellent under 100. Buy blank, buy a custom stamp, and use fabric ink. Total control over timing and genuinely charming when slightly imperfect.
- Tags and ribbon — no printing at all. Kraft tags tied to the cord carry names and double as place settings.
- Embroidery — premium and slow. Realistic only for small counts or high-value gifting.

Natural or coloured
Natural unbleached cotton suits almost every scheme, which is why it is the default for weddings — it sits with any palette and photographs warmly. Coloured bags are worth it when the colour is doing real work: a single strong accent across a neutral table, or a brand colour at a corporate event. Lead time, worked backwards
Start from the date the bags must be filled, not the event date — filling several hundred favours takes an evening and usually happens a week or two ahead.
- Blank bags — dispatch in 24–48 hours. Effectively no planning risk.
- Printed bags — 5–7 business days after you approve the proof, plus transit. Allow two to three weeks in total.
- The step that slips — artwork approval, especially when two families are deciding. Build in a buffer for that, not for the printing.
Three mistakes worth avoiding
- Buying the bag before deciding the contents. Sizing works one way round only.
- Ordering exactly the guest count. There is no upside and an obvious downside.
- Leaving artwork to the last week. Production is quick; approval is not.
