How Much Do Custom Printed Cotton Bags Cost? Bulk Pricing Explained

On this page
There is no single price for a custom printed cotton bag, because four separate costs stack on top of each other and only one of them falls with volume. Understanding which is which lets you steer a budget instead of guessing — and the honest answer is usually that you should buy more bags with a simpler print, not fewer bags with an elaborate one.

The four costs in every quote
| Component | Behaviour with volume | What controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Scales linearly | Bag size and GSM |
| Make-up | Falls slightly | Construction complexity, gussets, handles |
| Decoration setup | Fixed — falls sharply per unit | Number of colours, number of locations |
| Freight | Scales, and works against you | Total weight and cube |
The one most people miss is freight. Choosing a heavier fabric than the job needs raises the fabric cost and the shipping cost, on every bag. On a 5,000-unit order that decision moves more money than the print does.
Quantity moves the price most
Screen setup — burning a screen, mixing ink to your colour, registering the press — costs the same whether you print 100 bags or 5,000. Spread across 100 it is a large share of the unit price. Spread across 2,000 it is almost invisible.
That is why the curve is steep between 100 and 1,000, then flattens. Price breaks land at roughly 500, 1,000 and 5,000, and they are steps rather than a slope. If your requirement sits just under a step — 460 bags, or 900 — ask what the next one costs. The totals are often close enough that the extra bags are effectively free, and cotton does not expire.
What each print colour actually costs
Every spot colour is its own screen and its own pass through the press. Going from one colour to three triples the setup and adds two more passes to every bag.
On a large run that is absorbed. On a small one it dominates. A three-colour print on 150 bags can cost more in setup than the bags themselves — which is why, if your budget is fixed, cutting colours saves far more than cutting quantity. A clean one-colour mark on natural cotton also tends to look more considered than a busy multi-colour design.
Six ways to lower the per-bag price
- Round up to the next price break. The cheapest bags in any order are the ones that take you over a threshold.
- Cut print colours before quantity. One or two colours, every time, unless the artwork genuinely needs more.
- Print one location. A back panel is a second setup. Worth it for sponsored events, rarely otherwise.
- Right-size the bag. Fabric is the largest single component. An oversized bag costs more and looks empty.
- Do not over-specify the weight. 145 GSM covers most jobs. Canvas costs more in fabric and again in freight.
- Consolidate runs. One order of 1,000 beats four of 250, because you pay the setup once.
Blank versus printed
These are different purchases. Blank bags carry no setup at all, ship from stock in 24–48 hours and cost the least per unit. If you need fewer than roughly fifty branded bags, buying blank cotton drawstring bags and using a local decorator is almost always cheaper than any custom-print route. Above that, printing in the same factory that made the bag removes a shipping leg and a margin.
Why quotes differ so much between suppliers
Compare the delivered price per bag, not the quoted unit price. A promotional distributor buys from a factory and adds margin. An overseas quote adds sea freight, duty and six to ten weeks in which your stock does not exist — and if the run arrives wrong, your options are to accept it or start again.
Also check that you are comparing the same bag. An unstated GSM, or a size measured to the top of the drawstring channel rather than the seam, makes two quotes look comparable when they are not. The specification checklist in where to buy cotton drawstring bags in bulk covers what to pin down.
Getting a real number
Four things produce a usable quote the same day: bag size, quantity, number of print colours, and your required date. If you have a fixed budget, send the budget instead — we will tell you what it buys. Frequently asked questions
How much do custom printed cotton bags cost?
It depends on four things: quantity, bag size, fabric weight and how many colours are in your artwork. Quantity matters most because screen setup is fixed and spreads across the run. Send those four details for a delivered price per bag, usually the same working day.
Why does adding a colour cost so much on a small order?
Each spot colour needs its own screen and its own pass through the press. That setup is charged once regardless of quantity, so on 150 bags it can exceed the cost of the bags. On 2,000 it is barely noticeable.
Is it cheaper to order more bags than I need?
Often, yes, if it takes you over a price break. Between 460 and 500 bags the totals are frequently within a few percent, so the extra forty are close to free. Cotton bags do not expire, so spares get used at the next event.
What is the cheapest way to get branded cotton bags?
Under about fifty bags, buy blank from stock and decorate locally. Above that, a single consolidated order printed in one colour at the factory that makes the bags is cheapest — you pay the setup once and skip the reseller margin.
Does fabric weight change the price much?
Twice over. Heavier fabric costs more per bag and weighs more to ship, and freight scales with the whole order. Unless the bag must hold its shape or carry real weight, 145 GSM is the right specification and the saving is genuine.
