Muslin bags and cotton drawstring bags are the same material — muslin is cotton, woven lighter and more openly. Every muslin bag is a cotton bag; not every cotton bag is muslin. Choose muslin when airflow is the point
- Tea, herbs and spices — aroma passes through; the bag can brew directly in the cup
- Straining — nut milk, cold brew, stocks. Muslin holds its shape where loose cheesecloth collapses
- Soap and bath products — a cured bar keeps drying rather than sweating
- Seed saving and drying herbs — airflow keeps seed viable and stops mould
- Favours — the informal, natural look reads as handmade
- High-volume packaging — cheapest per bag and lightest to ship
Choose standard cotton when it has to conceal or carry
- Retail packaging — opaque, so the product is a reveal rather than visible through the bag
- Jewellery and premium gifting — denser fabric reads as more considered
- Detailed artwork — fine lines and small type hold their edges
- Anything with weight — shoes, hardware, books, bulk dry goods
- Repeated daily use — gym bags, laundry, everyday carry
The opacity test
This is the fastest way to decide. Hold a sample up to a window with your product inside. If you can make out what it is and that bothers you, you need standard cotton. If you cannot, or you do not mind, muslin will do the job for less money.
The same test catches a common sourcing problem: a supplier selling thin cotton as "muslin" when it is simply low-grade fabric. Genuine muslin is evenly woven and translucent; poor cotton is unevenly woven and thin in patches.
Printing on each
Both screen print well. On muslin, ink spreads a little into the open weave, so keep type above about 6pt and avoid hairlines — a bold single-colour mark looks excellent, a detailed crest less so. Standard cotton holds finer detail and is the safer choice for a logo with small text or thin strokes.

Where calico and canvas fit
