Single vs Double Drawstring Bags: Which Should You Choose?

A single drawstring gathers the opening from one side; a double drawstring pulls it closed evenly from both. On a small bag that difference is barely noticeable. Above roughly 10x12 inches it decides whether the bag closes properly at all — which is why almost every large cotton bag is double.
How each one works
Single drawstring. One cord runs through the channel and exits at one point. Pull it and the opening gathers toward that side. Fast to open and close with one hand, and the cheapest construction.
Double drawstring. Two cords run through the same channel in opposite directions, exiting on opposite sides. Pull both and the opening draws shut evenly all round. It also lets the bag be carried by both cords, spreading load across the seam.
The size threshold
Below about 8x10 inches, a single cord is fine — there is not enough opening for uneven gathering to show, and the simpler closure is quicker to use.
Between 8x10 and 10x12 it is a judgement call, mostly driven by contents. Loose or heavy contents favour double; light items in a small bag do not need it.
Above roughly 10x12 inches, use double. A single cord on a large opening bunches the fabric to one side and leaves a visible gap on the other, and all the closing tension concentrates at one point on the channel. That is where large single-cord bags tear.

Security, not sealing
A double drawstring closes tighter, but neither closure seals. Cotton bags are not airtight and not tamper-evident. If contents must be genuinely sealed — for freshness, hygiene or security — use a sealed inner and the cotton bag as the outer.
What a double cord does give you is contents that stay put when the bag is knocked, carried or stacked, which is the practical requirement in most cases.
Does it cost more?
Slightly — a second cord and a second exit point. On a per-bag basis the difference is small, and it is nearly always worth paying above 10x12 inches because a bag that will not close properly is not usable at any price.
Below that threshold, single is the sensible default: cheaper, faster to use, and no functional downside at small sizes.
