• Freight — scales with weight and cube, and works against you at volume.

1. GSM: matching fabric weight to the job

GSM is grams per square metre — the fabric weight. It is the single biggest driver of both how the bag feels and what it costs to deliver.

2. Size and handles

Size the bag around what goes in it, then check the print fits — not the other way round.

Handle length decides whether the bag is carried or worn. Roughly 20–22 inches total is hand-carry; 26–30 inches clears a shoulder and a winter coat, which matters for a conference bag someone wears all day. 3. What actually fails on a cheap tote

Almost never the fabric. Two failure points account for most complaints, and both are specification choices rather than luck.

• Handle attachment. A handle tacked on with a single straight seam tears out under load. Look for a box-stitch or cross-stitch at each join — the reinforcement is visible, so you can check it on a sample in two seconds.
• Side seam stitch density. Too few stitches per inch and the seam opens along its length once the bag is loaded. A tighter seam costs fractionally more thread and machine time, and is the difference between a bag used for years and one binned after a month.

4. MOQ and how price breaks really work
