A cotton bag stops a candle jar chipping against whatever else is in the box — which is what actually damages candles in transit, not impact. Glass rarely shatters in a padded mailer; it chips at the rim where it touches another hard surface. Cloth removes that contact entirely, for a fraction of what a rigid box costs.

Measure the jar at its widest point — usually the rim or the shoulder, not the base — and add half an inch either side. Then add an inch and a half of height so the cord closes above the lid rather than straining across it.
Cotton or a rigid box?
Both, for shipping. A cotton bag prevents surface contact but does not resist crushing, so for posted orders the sequence that works is: candle in a bag, bag in a padded mailer or a right-sized box. The bag does the anti-chip job; the outer does the structural job.
For retail handover, market stalls and gifting, the bag alone is enough and looks better than a box the customer immediately discards.
Wax melts and tea lights
Small formats are where cotton is clearly better than the alternative. Wax melts in a poly bag look like a sample; the same melts in a 3x4 cotton pouch with a stamped scent name look like a product. And because melts are sold in multiples, the per-unit packaging cost matters — a small cotton bag is cheap enough to work at that price point.
One thing to know about fragrance
Cotton breathes, so a scented candle in a cloth bag will scent the bag and, over time, lose a little top note. For most makers that is a feature — the customer smells the product on opening the parcel.
If you are shipping several different scents together, though, they will cross-scent through the fabric. Ship strongly scented candles in a sealed inner and use the cotton bag as the outer, or keep scents in separate outer boxes.
What to specify
- 145 GSM cotton for jar candles. Enough body to cushion the glass and opaque enough for a proper reveal. Muslin is too light to protect a jar.
- Natural unbleached — cheapest, hides wax marks better than white, and suits the craft positioning most candle brands want.
- Double drawstring above 6x8 — larger openings do not close evenly on a single cord.

Branding
On a 5x7 bag the usable print panel is roughly 3.75 x 4.25 inches — room for a brand name and scent, comfortably. One colour on natural cotton is cheapest and usually looks best.

The reuse argument
Candle packaging is thrown away faster than almost any other category — the box goes straight in the recycling. A cotton bag does not, because it has an obvious next use as a travel pouch, cable bag or storage for the next candle. For a brand selling repeat purchases, that bag stays in the customer's home carrying your name.
