Drawstring Bag Quality Checklist: 10 Checks Before You Accept a Bulk Order

4 min read

A good cotton drawstring bag has an even weave, folded seams with no raw edges inside, a cord channel stitched down its full length, cords that slide freely and a finished size within about a quarter inch of the spec. Check those five things on a handful of bags from every carton and you will catch almost every problem before it reaches a customer.

Use this checklist on your first pack before you scale up and on every delivery when it arrives. It applies to any supplier's cotton drawstring bags, including ours.

The 10 checks

1. Fabric: even weave, no thin patches

Hold the bag up to a window. Muslin is meant to be see-through, but the weave should be even across the whole panel. Thin streaks, slubs or holes point to low-grade fabric. Canvas should be close to opaque.

2. Fibre: is it actually cotton?

Cotton feels soft and slightly matte and creases easily. Polyester blends feel slicker and spring back. If in doubt, a burn test on a loose thread settles it: cotton burns to a soft grey ash, polyester melts into a hard bead. Do this safely, over a sink.

3. Side seams: folded, straight and closed

Turn the bag inside out. Raw edges should be folded in or overlocked so they do not fray. Stitching should run straight, with no skipped stitches or gaps at the corners, where bags most often split.

4. Bottom corners

Push a fist into the corners. They should be stitched through without holes. This is where heavy contents such as coffee beans or rice find a weakness.

5. Cord channel: sewn down all the way

The fold at the top that carries the cord should be stitched along its whole length. If it is loose in places, the cord can snag and the fabric pulls out of shape.

6. Cords: length, ends and slide

Pull the bag closed and open five times. Cords should slide without catching. Ends should be knotted or sealed so they do not unravel or disappear into the channel. On a double drawstring bag, both cords should be the same length.

7. Size tolerance

Measure the finished inside width and height on five bags. They should be within about a quarter inch of the listed size and of each other. A bag that is an inch short is a packing problem, not a cosmetic one.

8. Cleanliness and smell

Bags should be free of loose threads, oil marks and strong odours. This matters most for food, tea and cosmetic packaging.

9. Print, if printed

Check that the logo is straight, in the agreed position, the right colour and fully covered. Rub a white cloth over it: the ink should not transfer. Our guide to custom printed canvas drawstring bags explains what a good print on cotton looks like.

10. Count and packing

Weigh a counted bundle of 10 and compare it with the carton weight to confirm the count. Check that the bags are packed flat and dry.

How many bags should you check?

You do not need to check every bag. A practical rule for small businesses:

Order size Bags to inspect
Up to 500 10 to 15, from different bundles
500 to 2,000 20 to 30, from every carton
Over 2,000 At least 50, spread across cartons

If more than one or two of the bags you check fail the same test, contact the supplier before you use the bags.

Test before you scale up

The cheapest quality check is a small first order. Order a 100-pack in the exact size and fabric, put your product in a few bags, wash one if your customers will, and see how it looks. Then use the questions in how to choose a cotton drawstring bag manufacturer to confirm the bulk order will match your first pack.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell if a drawstring bag is good quality?

Look for an even weave, folded seams with no raw edges inside, a cord channel stitched along its full length, cords that slide freely and a finished size close to the listing.

How can I check a bag is 100% cotton?

Cotton feels matte and creases easily. A careful burn test on a loose thread confirms it: cotton leaves soft grey ash, polyester melts into a hard bead.

What size tolerance is normal for cotton bags?

About a quarter inch either way on the finished inside size. Cotton is cut and sewn by hand, so tiny variations are normal, but an inch is not.

How many bags should I inspect from a bulk order?

10 to 15 bags for orders up to 500, 20 to 30 for up to 2,000, and at least 50 above that, taken from different cartons.

Do cotton drawstring bags shrink?

Unwashed cotton can shrink a little on the first hot wash. If customers will wash the bag, wash one bag first and size up if needed.
