How to Choose a Cotton Drawstring Bag Manufacturer: 9 Questions to Ask First

5 min read

A good cotton drawstring bag manufacturer will tell you the fabric, the finished inside size, the minimum order, the lead time and the price per bag before you ask twice. If any of those five answers is vague, you are probably talking to a reseller, and the problems show up on your first bulk delivery rather than in the quote.

We make cotton drawstring bags factory-direct, so we get asked these questions every day. Here is what to ask any supplier, including us, and what a straight answer looks like.

Seams, cord channels and the finished size tell you more about a supplier than the photos on their homepage.

1. Is it 100% woven cotton, and which weave?

"Cotton bag" covers a lot. Ask whether the fabric is 100% cotton or a poly-cotton blend, and whether it is muslin (light, open weave), calico (medium, plain weave) or canvas (heavy, tight weave). A manufacturer knows the weave by name. A reseller often says "natural fabric". If you are not sure which weave you need, our guide to muslin vs canvas vs calico explains the difference and what each is for.

2. Is the size the finished inside measurement?

This is the most common reason a bulk order does not fit the product. Some suppliers quote the cut fabric size before hemming, which can lose half an inch to an inch on each side. Ask for the finished inside width and height, and whether the height is measured to the cord or to the top edge.

3. What is the minimum order, and why?

For plain bags, a manufacturer holding stock should sell any quantity. For printed bags a minimum of around 100 is normal because of the screen setup. A minimum of 5,000 or 10,000 on plain bags usually means the supplier is ordering from someone else and needs a full carton to make it worth their while.

4. Can I get a sample of the exact bag?

A sample of the actual size and fabric you are ordering, not a "similar" bag, is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Ask how much it costs and how fast it ships. We sell single bags in most sizes at $5.49 so a buyer can test fit and quality before ordering 500.

5. What does the price per bag look like at 100, 500 and 1,000?

A real manufacturer can give you a price ladder immediately, because it is based on fabric use and sewing time. If a supplier needs several days to come back with a unit price on a standard size, they are waiting on someone else's quote. Our own cotton drawstring bag prices are published for every size so you can compare like for like.

6. How long from order to delivery?

Split the answer into two parts: stock bags and made-to-order. Stock bags should ship within days. Printed or custom-size bags take longer because they are made for you. Get both numbers in writing and check whether the lead time is to dispatch or to delivery.

7. How do you print, and what file do you need?

Screen printing suits most logos on cotton and lasts the life of the bag. Ask which method the supplier uses, how many ink colours are included, and what file format they want. A manufacturer will ask for vector artwork and send a proof before printing. See how to print your logo on cotton bags for what each method looks like.

8. Can you make a size you do not list?

Manufacturers cut fabric, so a custom size is a pattern change rather than a problem. Resellers can only sell what their source makes. If your product sits between two standard sizes, this question matters more than price.

9. What happens if the order is wrong?

Ask before you pay: what counts as a defect, how you report it, and whether the fix is a reprint, a replacement or a refund. A manufacturer who inspects before shipping will answer this plainly.

Red flags

  • No fabric weight or weave named in the listing or the quote.
  • Photos that are clearly stock images used by several other sellers.
  • A price that does not change between 100 and 1,000 pieces, which usually means a margin is being added on top of someone else's price.
  • Claims of certification with no certificate number. Organic and fair-trade claims can be checked; ask for the licence number and look it up.
  • No sample option for a standard size.

Manufacturer, wholesaler or marketplace seller?

Manufacturer Wholesaler Marketplace seller
Custom sizes Yes Rarely No
Printing in-house Usually Outsourced Rarely
Price at 1,000+ Lowest Middle Highest per bag
Speed on small packs Good if stocked Good Fastest

For a few dozen bags, a marketplace pack is fine. For a steady supply, printing or a non-standard size, go to the source. Our guide to buying cotton drawstring bags in bulk covers ordering at volume once you have picked a supplier.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a cotton bag supplier is the manufacturer?

A manufacturer can name the fabric weave, give finished inside sizes, quote a price ladder straight away and make a size they do not list. If the supplier needs days to price a standard bag or cannot change the size, they are likely reselling.

What is a normal minimum order for cotton drawstring bags?

No minimum for plain stock bags from a supplier that holds stock, and around 100 pieces for printed bags because of the screen setup. Custom sizes may need a higher minimum because they are cut to order.

Should I order a sample before a bulk order?

Yes. Order a sample of the exact size and fabric and test it with your product. It is the cheapest way to avoid 500 bags that are half an inch too small.

What size measurement should a supplier give me?

The finished inside width and height after seams. Cut fabric sizes can be up to an inch larger on each side than the usable inside of the bag.

Is it cheaper to buy from a manufacturer?

At 1,000 bags or more, usually yes, because there is no middle margin. For very small quantities a marketplace pack can be cheaper overall once shipping is included.
