Jewelry Packaging with Cotton Drawstring Pouches: A Small-Business Guide

Soft cotton will not scratch metal or soft stones, which is the entire reason jewellers use pouches rather than card or plastic. A pouch also separates pieces so they cannot rub against each other in a drawer or a handbag — the single most common cause of hairline scratches on finished jewellery.

Sizes by piece

Allow a little slack. A pouch stretched tight around a piece presses it against the fabric and defeats the protection — and the drawstring will not close cleanly.

Why not card or plastic?

• Card boxes present well but cost several times more, take up shelf and shipping volume, and offer no protection once the piece moves inside.
• Poly bags are cheap but cheapen the product on sight, and rigid plastic edges can scratch soft metals and pearls.
• Cotton costs a fraction of a box, ships flat, protects on contact, and — unlike either alternative — gets kept and reused, so the brand stays in the customer's drawer.

The anti-tarnish question

Worth being precise, because this gets oversold. A cotton pouch is not chemically anti-tarnish. Silver tarnishes through reaction with sulphur compounds in the air, and breathable cotton does not exclude air.

What it does do is prevent contact scratching and keep pieces separated. If tarnish is your concern, add an anti-tarnish strip inside the pouch, or use a sealed inner for long-term storage with the cotton pouch as the outer. Muslin or denser cotton?

This is the one specification choice that matters.

• Muslin — cheapest, soft, but slightly translucent, so the piece is partly visible through the bag. Fine for craft-market and handmade positioning.
• 145 GSM cotton — fully opaque, so opening the pouch is a reveal. Denser fabric also feels more substantial in the hand. The right choice for anything positioned as premium.

Branding on a small pouch

On a 3x4 pouch the usable print panel is roughly 2 x 2.25 inches — room for a wordmark or monogram, not a detailed crest. Keep to a single colour and type above about 6pt, because ink spreads slightly into a cotton weave.

• Under 100 — blank pouches plus a custom rubber stamp with fabric ink. Cheapest by a wide margin.
• 100+ — screen printing at the factory, cheaper per unit and it survives handling.
• No printing at all — a small kraft tag on the drawstring carries the brand and doubles as a care card.
